Types of Tournaments

Round Robins/Practice Tournaments 

1-2 day tournaments offered in the fall. Students speak/debate during every round, no eliminations. This is great practice for competition and the students receive valuable feedback to help sharpen and prepare them for the winter/spring competitions. These tournaments are not sanctioned by the NCFCA and may be organized by individuals, clubs, or groups of clubs.

 

Regional or District Qualifier

A regional (or district) qualifier is open to all Affiliates in good standing within the region (or district) and offers 10 speech events and 2 debate events. Competitors who advance to elimination rounds qualify to their Regional Championship.

 

National Mixer

A National Mixer is open to all Affiliates in good standing from all regions and offers 10 speech events and 3 debate events. Competitors who advance to elimination rounds qualify to their Regional Championship. Competitors who place 1st in any event qualify to the National Championship.

 

 

Regional Championship 

 

A Regional Championship is open to all Affiliates in good standing who have qualified through a Regional Qualifier, National Mixer, or a National Open.

 

National Open 

As a national-level tournament, a National Open is open to all Affiliates in good standing from all regions and offers 10 speech events and 3 debate events. Competitors who advance to elimination rounds qualify to their Regional Championship. Competitors who place 1st or 2nd in any event qualify to the National Championship.

 

National Championship Tournament 

The National Championship is open to all Affiliates in good standing who have qualified through a Regional Championship or the At-Large Qualification System.
