Jeff Garrett - Apologetics
Raised in Garland, Texas, Jeff surrendered to Jesus in 1973 and was called into ministry after graduating UT, Austin in 1986. He spent three years as a youth pastor in Dallas, graduated Asbury Seminary in 1992, became an ordained elder in 1994, and has been a pastor for the past 19 years. He currently pastors at First United Methodist Church in Forney. Jeff has been married to the love of his life, Cindi, for the past 23 years and has 4 children.
Jeff is a dynamic speaker who loves to share his passion for Jesus Christ with others. He is excited to be teaching/coaching Apologetics this year at ROC.
Cindi Garrett - Junior Speech
Cindi was raised in Dallas and graduated from U.T. Austin in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Speech. She's enjoyed home schooling her 4 children, Austin, Hannah, Alyssa and Marshall and loves learning right along with them!! More importantly than training them academically, she is passionate about training their hearts and preparing them to serve and glorify God in every area of their lives!
Last year was the Garrett family's premier year in competitive speech and they benefited from every experience and are committed to the vision of ROC, excited to see how God will shape these children and use them to make a difference for His kingdom!
Katie Riley - Team Policy Debate
Katie started out in life with a stutter. Her mom was hesitant to push her into Speech competitions because she thought they might discourage Katie and cause her stutter to worsen, but after watching her older sister compete, Katie's competitive spirit kicked into gear and off she went! As a result, her stutter was gone and in its place was a confident, competent speaker.
Katie competed in the NCFCA for six years. Her accomplishments include: numerous state, regional, and national speech titles, 2009 National Ironman, 2009 Regional & National Open Sweepstakes Champion, 2009 2nd Place National Original Oratory, 2005 1st Place National Duo Champion, and 2007 1st Place National Expos Champion.
Mary Jo Marvin - Apologetics & Impromptu
Mary Jo was brand-new to speech when her family joined ROC in 2010. She was so impressed with the interdisciplinary training ROC provided her children that she desired to serve on a deeper level. She now enjoys coaching Impromptu and will also serve in Apologetics, where she can encourage and guide students as they grapple with the issues of their faith and learn to articulate it clearly. She is thrilled to share her love of God’s word and the study skills she learned in Precepts Bible Study and AWANA with ROC students.
Mary Jo has been married to her husband Eric for 27 years. They homeschool their two children, Scott and Natalie.
Sue Riley - Interps/Platforms, Impromptu, Junior Debate & LD Debate
Sue has been coaching speech and debate for over ten years now and has enjoyed seeing her students continue to use their speaking skills in college, the workplace, and even Washington, D.C. Over the years she has coached numerous state and regional speech champions as well as four 1st place NCFCA National Speech Champions!
Sue really believes that we need to raise up a generation of young people who can confidently and effectively communicate truth and light to a dark world. It is this passion that drives her to minister through ROC. "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Phillipians 3:14
